It’s obvious that Bollywood needs a string of big hits. This year has been a disappointment for the Hindi film industry, with a string of box office failures not easy for even the stars. Now all eyes are on Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Shamsela, Touted as the next big hope. With a budget of over Rs 1.5 crore and starring Kapoor, Yash Raj Films (YRF) produced the mega project. Set to hit theaters on Friday, it has many fates.

Joining Kapoor in the star lineup are Sanjay Dutt and Vani Kapoor. Filmmaker and business analyst Girish Johar is optimistic about Kapoor fans following the change.

“But the content has to speak. The opening weekend is crucial, and beyond that, the content has to dominate,” he said. Shamshera is a period film set in the 1800s and the struggle for independence. “Obviously, audience tastes have changed during and after the pandemic. It’s in movies that are popular today,” Johar added.

It is estimated that Shamshera, which will be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, will be viewed on more than 3,500 screens in India, with another 1,000 coming from overseas markets. One factor in its favor is the week until the release of the next film, Ek Villain.

Nahta points out that YRF needs to be hit after Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Samrat Prithviraj sink. “It is important to maintain control over exhibitors and keep the enviable equation with satellite channels and OTT platforms intact. After all, this helps to make huge sums of money for their films regardless of their box office performance ,” he explained.

Right now, the opening weekend is all that matters.
