In the book, Cruise is credited with distancing himself from Kidman because the church viewed her as a “negative influence.”

According to a New York Post Page Six article, to win over Cruise again, Scientology hired controversial private detective Anthony Pellicano to spy on and wiretap his ex-wife Nicole Kidman. The goal of these acts is presumably to lessen the influence that Kidman has over the actor.
Another thing that he argues is that after the separation, Tom Cruise could become an objectively better Scientologist with the influence of Nicole allegedly no longer troubling him as it had before.
