  • In 2020, we’ve seen many people try tricky hair changes at home during lockdown.
  • Some people dye their hair, while others cut it all off.
  • Many people in the public eye have also completely changed their hairstyles, and in a few cases, there are meaningful reasons behind this.

In the second quarter of 2020, as many countries were just dealing with the effects of widespread lockdowns caused by the pandemic, the growing number of celebrities who started dyeing and cutting their hair at home made headlines. Some people cut their partner’s hair, some cut their own hair, and of course, there are some botched cases.

But as the trend of spreading dangerous at-home looks continues, some have their professional hairstylists on speed dial to guide their efforts. The act of experimenting with amateur hairstyling creates a cool factor that can sometimes be a struggle between elites. Like letting the gray roots show up, many celebrities are starting to blossom in their understated looks. All of this reveals the extent to which people in the public eye must or choose to conform to vanity.

Before long, however, we were witnessing a wave of people — not just celebrities — cutting their hair short or removing it entirely. Others started with bright hair colors ranging from blue, orange to red. Many people attribute these drastic hair changes to the fact that locks are the perfect time to try your hair out, because if it goes wrong, no one will see you.

Others rationalized the phenomenon as a severe lack of control during government-imposed restrictions, a reason psychologists confirmed. Psychologist Dr Suzanne Degges-White told Refinery29, “Making a change, like cutting your hair, feels good because you are taking action. When you take action, there is a sense of accomplishment. If you change your hair, it feels great Well, there will be rewards — a feeling of freedom, like having agency in the world.”

Whatever the reason, women are cutting and dyeing their hair short in 2020. Beyond the visuals of the new hairstyle, however, a handful of women in the public eye made these changes for sensual and meaningful reasons.

Willow Smith

In March, music duo Willow Smith and Tyler Cole hosted a live exhibit to ease anxiety — which happened when Tyler shaved Willow’s hair. Allure Reports’ exhibition at its rented event space in Los Angeles explores the eight stages of anxiety — including paranoia, anger, sadness, numbness, euphoria, intense interest, empathy and acceptance — for 24 hours.

Willow is open about her struggles with mental health and, as co-host, shares her experiences on Red Table Talk.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga made countless headlines with her blue hair color after sharing inspiration for her bold look. According to TODAY, she wore the muted blue as a tribute to hairstylist Frederic Aspiras, whose mother died in June.

In an Instagram post, Lady Gaga showed off her new hair color: “@fredericaspiras rock color named after his recently deceased mother…Suzie’s ocean blonde. I love you Freddy, it’s a special kind of love charm”. Since then, Lady Gaga has changed her hair color several times, but the move hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Nadia Jafta

The social media creator is known for her comedy skits, but in April, she got the spotlight for a drastic hairstyle change. Nadia opened up about her family’s mother’s cancer history and chose to grow her hair so it could be donated to cancer survivors.
