The Toyota FJ Cruiser has finally been laid to rest after more than 15 years on the market.

When they left the U.S. at the start of the retro off-roader craze, the Toyota FJ Cruiser became an elusive car and as of now (as in 2018) has not been discontinued. It is, however, still offered in Japan. There’s still a few left in the Middle East, but with the 2023 Toyota FJ Cruiser’s limited-availability “Final Edition” that will usher this neoclassic off-roader into the past after 15 years.

The Drive

Abdul Latif Jameel Motors, Toyota’s official Middle East distributor, announced its upcoming model lineups. They have been selling Toyotas in the region since 1955. The FJ Cruiser, finally, will no longer be manufactured as of December, and 1,000 will be made available as the Final Edition. It will be known by a distinctive, serial sticker, a distinctive combination of beige paint, upholstery, and interior trim, and a special black coating throughout. This sounds almost exactly like the Final Edition sold in Japan in late 2017 (photos of which are shown here), which would also imply standard 20-inch aluminum wheels and running boards.

The Drive

Outside of the occasional modern change in infotainment systems or side mirrors, the FJ Cruiser remains just as we remember it from the late 2000s. The 4.0-liter V6 engine produces 268 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to part-time four-wheel drive with an electronic locking rear differential. This style is set to debut next quarter with Abdul Latif Jameel Motors in Saudi Arabia and then, at the end of the month, it will leave for good.

We can start buying the ones left in the Middle East when they become old enough to import from abroad. We might be able to trade our old land yachts for theirs, if they like them.
