All three players birdied the first playoff hole, the 501-yard par 5 18th. Romo then got the ball under control as they hit the 18th again, hitting the green with two shots and two putts for the winning birdie after Pavelski and Mulder missed their second shot and missed the jump.

The $125,000 first-place prize will go to tournament charities as Romo competes as an amateur. As an NFL analyst for CBS Sports, he will play the 36-hole U.S. Amateur qualifier Monday in Gladewater, Texas.

Romo, Mulder and Pavelski all finished with 62 points on the revised Stableford scoring system.

“I have to be patient,” said Romo, who trailed former All-Star pitcher Mulder by as many as six points early on the back nine. “It’s a great feeling to come from behind. All the wins here are special, but this time is different because my kids are 10 and 8 and they love it.”

Amateurs and old lessons

Shot Scope has released data analysis of 6,780 rounds and 564,096 at-bats played by amateurs at the Old Course at St Andrews ahead of the 150th British Open.

The average score for amateurs was 83.2, much better than The Sweet Spot had guessed. However, it is safe to assume that few beginners travel to Scotland to play old courses.

Other findings include: On the famous Road Hole, being in the sand is better than on the road, as amateurs spend 15% of the time getting up and down the sand compared to 4% on the road. In addition, amateurs had ups and downs 43 percent of the time, starting in Sin Valley on the 18th hole.
