The book ban movement has a chilling new tactic: harass teachers on social media

“It’s a movement that’s formed online, so the number of times these activists are shifting online is not so much they’re shifting their goals from schools to teachers and librarians,” Friedman said. “And it won’t stop there.”

Vera has seen the impact firsthand. She said she had been bombarded with Facebook threatening messages and phone calls in the week following the Pride Book event. To protect herself, she now carries Mace and has a home security camera installed.

Other conservative groups are also tracking teachers’ social media accounts. Moms for Liberty and its affiliate, Moms for Libraries, have been conducting such surveillance and have begun releasing “liberal-minded books” with Brave Books, a conservative publishing house that claims to “empower this generation of young people with conservative values.” At the same time “glorify the Lord in all we do”.

The Leadership Academy is another conservative group that has defended this strategy. “Anyone using social media to engage in public discussions is showing everyone their personal or political views,” Matthew Hurt, director of graduate relations at the Leadership Institute, said in an email to me. “If teachers, administrators and elected officials support objectionable views on social media, there is a good chance they will support those views in the classroom or at school board meetings.”
