Ryan Coogler REVEALS how he convinced Rihanna to return to the studio for her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever solo album

When interviewed about how he felt about the contribution by singer Rihanna for the soundtrack of Black Panther, the director of the movie, Ryan Coogler, had nothing but praise.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been getting a lot of attention, mainly due to the storyline with Chadwick Boseman’s untimely demise. This legendary cast is joined by Ryan Coogler in a series of candid interviews who has been speaking of missing the actor a close friend, who has passed on. With Lift Me Up, Rihanna has made her solo music debut after six years, which is on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack and pays homage to Chadwick Boseman’s MCU legacy.

How did Ryan Coogler manage to get Rihanna to make her solo music comeback in the film with Lift Me Up from Black Panther’s Wakanda Forever soundtrack?

At Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Press Conference, Ryan shared, I can’t take sole credit for that. We have an incredible composer, Ludwig Göransson, who’s also a music producer, who’s got a great reputation. You know, he made This Is America with Childish Gambino. So, Ludwig was a major factor. Big thanks to Jay Brown at Roc Nation and Jay-Z, who’s a friend, who helped make the connection.

On the greatness of Rihana, Coogler said, look, she’s given us a whole career of music and now clothing and makeup and the world would understand if she were to stop performing. And I completely understand because I love her music so much. I feel like she’s given us all that you could ask for. But the truth is, we were looking for a great artist who could do justice to the film, understand and deliver the themes in an entertaining manner, so we asked Kendrick Lamar to write an introduction.

On Lift Me Up’s important theme of motherhood and recent mom, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler says, It made sense that it would be a woman, it made sense that it could be someone who could speak to the feeling of motherhood, as that is a major theme in this film. And then, it happened that she, in her life, happened to be in that space, that she wanted to share. And so, the trailer of what everyone was doing, it felt like she got so invested. It made it, you know, happen and she came to the decision to see what she can do in it.

Tems was featured as an artist in a remix with Ryan Coogler, to which Ryan elaborated: And we, yeah, I mean we collaborated with this incredible singer Tems. We, uh, she and I wrote the words and then Ludwig made the music. And the truth is the music was recorded in a lot of different ways. Some of it was recorded in Africa for the film Black Panther when Ludwig was in Senegal. But yeah, in the end we loved the end result and I felt very, um, happy and fortunate to have worked with such an amazing artist as well.

The director of Black Panther breaks down talking about how proud he is to be a part of the film.

Furthermore, at a point during the speech, Ryan Coogler directed an emotional message at Black Panther’s Wakanda Forever’s cast members: Letitia Wright (Shuri), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Danai Gurira (Okoye), and Tenoch Huerta (Namor) “Sitting here thinking about it, it’s hitting me right now. These four actors [points at Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira and Tenoch Huerta] that are next to me, I watched you guys’ work since way before I knew y’all. I remember seeing y’all work and saying, ‘Man, I’d love to work with them someday.’ Tenoch in Sin nombre, that’s the first time I saw you. Danai, Mother of George. Lupita, we came up together with 12 Years [a Slave] and Fruitvale [Station]. At the same time, I saw you [looks at Wright] in My Brother the Devil, 2012. And Chad brought us all together, brought us together, you know what I mean? He just keeps on giving, you know?”

So, I’m just really thankful that Rihanna was the latest gift to join the family and can’t wait for folks to hear her song in the film, Ryan Google concluded in a humbling speech. His words brought tears to Lupita, Letitia, and Danai, and the group embraced one another to console.

For the remix, no better choice than Rihanna to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman’s legacy!
