Prakash Jha gives insights on Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha: ‘They are making bakwaas remakes’

Despite boycotts, Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha flopped at the box office. Aashram director Prakash Jha says the industry is merely making bakwas remakes and bashing the film’s content.

Several critics and audiences have criticized Aamir Khan’s film Laal Singh Chaddha after it tanked at the box office. The movie received negative reviews from the press as well. What some are calling the ‘Boycott Bollywood’ trend on social media didn’t seem to impact the movie’s finances because, according to Aashram director Prakash Jha, the Bollywood remake’s issues had nothing to do with what it is on the screen.

This author talked to the filmmaker Prakash Jha and queried him about whether these boycotts are really affecting Bollywood. He derided the content of the films and urged these protesters to accept that these films are so bad. Films can’t be made just by big budgets, big names, or corporates; they have to be written well so that it makes you understand and entertains you.

They are merely remaking old movies, said the director, adding that people should be making stories that are rooted in our culture. “If you don’t have a story to tell, stop making films,” Jha said, further adding that people have become lazy and should work hard and think originally.

According to Jha, the boycott culture has always existed, but now people use social media as a communication medium. In his opinion, if Dangal and Lagaan had failed, it would have been understood that the boycott had been to blame, but Laal Singh Chaddha failed to meet audience expectations. I haven’t come across someone who has said, ‘Wow, what a film!’ he stated.

Aamir’s efforts and his hard work were acknowledged by Jha, but he argued that the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha cannot simply be attributed to boycott but also to the film’s content.

While they were very successful with their web series Aashram starring Bobby Deol as Nirala Baba, Jha is now working on a slice-of-life film Matto Ki Saikal about a labourer and his family, with their bicycles. It will be released in theaters on September 16.
