PaintScaping provides first-ever mapping of iconic Hollywood sign

PaintScaping lights up the Hollywood sign

“We used six Barco UDX 40 lumens for this projection. Great firepower!”

PaintScaping, the world leader in 3D projection mapping, at the end of last month, was the third time in history to light up the iconic Hollywood sign and the first to project an image.

The Los Angeles-based company projected a 3D image of the BET Network on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25, while hosting the 2022 BET Awards.

The June 21 trial run of the projection wowed onlookers and caused a stir on social media as the Hollywood Sign flashed with colorful designs. So far, a single TikTok post has more than 500,000 views and more than 115,000 likes.

“It’s so special to see it light up for the first time in over 20 years!” one fan tweeted enjoying Halsey’s Hollywood Bowl concert as the sign lit up. Another tweeted: “It was a fun half hour watching the Hollywood Sign light up.”

The projection is from a house below the sign.

“I’ve been dreaming of painting this sign for the past 20 years with my friend Jeff Kleiser, who owns the house,” said Philippe Bergeron, founder and CEO of PaintScaping. “We’re proud and honored to be part of this celebration.” This projection uses six Barco UDX 40 lumens. Great firepower!” Bergeron continued.

The Hollywood Sign hasn’t been lit since New Year’s celebrations in 2000. Before that, it was lit for the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. The sign, which originally read “Hollywood,” was also lit from 1923 to 1933. It fell into disrepair until the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce rescued it in 1949, removing the “land” section and creating the symbol of the entertainment capital of the world.

PaintScaping’s other 3D drawing projects include the first-ever projection on the operational rocket in Cape Canaveral, Florida; the Bellagio Fountain in Las Vegas for the 2022 NFL Draft; the AFL- CIO HQ pays homage to Martin Luther King Jr; was the first company to carry out a project on the east wall of the famous Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles; and provided all the mapping for the Calvin Harris-Rihanna music video “This is What Your Came For,” which 2.5 billion views on YouTube.
