With films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 setting benchmarks for success as COVID threatens to loosen controls on public travel, Bollywood producers hope the box office will return to the pre-COVID era. During the pandemic and lockdown, though, producers and exhibitors have agreed on shorter times, realizing that OTT premieres make more sense because audiences aren’t fully flocking to theaters. But a recent spate of box office successes has inspired producers and studios to renegotiate with theaters.

Devang Sampat of Cinepolis told ETimes: “This is a great move. Anyway, the previous arrangement was temporary, and now the studios come and say if the gap is around 8 weeks, the box office results will be better. . period, the gap was 4 weeks, but now producers are reaching out and saying 8 weeks is a better option.”

Producer and film expert Girish Johar sees the return to the eight-week schedule as a last resort. He explained: “The cinema audience has been shrinking. People are more willing to wait a few weeks and then watch a new film after the OTT release, at a lower price and in the comfort of their home. Producers have realised that this habit will not last long. It was fruitful to look at. So, just like the Southern Brotherhood, the Hindi maker decided to reinstate the 8-week window between theatrical and OTT releases. Also, since OTT platforms don’t pay cash-rich prices like they used to, It was a logical decision to strengthen the exhibition revenue chain.”

Ram Mirchandani, Producer of Vidyut Jamwal’s Khuda Haafiz 2, said: “Our film Khuda Haafiz 2 this week will have a 4-week interval before its digital release. However, I personally feel whether the interval is 6 weeks, It will be a win-win for both parties.”

Manoj Desai, executive director of G7 Studios and Maratha Mandir Cinema, believes the gap should be wider. He added: “Eight weeks is too little. Movies should be released on OTT after 13 to 14 weeks. In the past, I couldn’t release my movie ‘Khuda Gawah’ on TV for five years because it was with distributors. It was very strict at the time, but the OTT made it challenging and there was nothing we could do about it.” But he did welcome the 8-week gap of 4 weeks.

Producer Ratan Jain reiterated audience behavior, saying: “The eight-week gap between theatrical and OTT releases is good news for the industry. Otherwise, people tend not to go to the cinema to wait for a movie if the gap is four weeks. Post on OTT.”

Veteran exhibitor Nitin Datar explained: “This is a good move, which will help single-screen cinemas tide over the losses during the pandemic, and help break the habit of moviegoers who don’t go to theaters anymore.”

Manoj Desai believes that Bollywood content is no longer enough to attract mass audiences. He said: “Bollywood needs to remake its content. Cinema owners have to resort to showing more and more southern dubbed films that work well, be it RRR, Pushpa, KGF 1 Or KGF 2. I wonder where the standard gor loses? We need to make the kind of movies that Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra did in the past. OTT platforms now show package deals, which creates more headaches for exhibitors.

Girish Johar explained that the time was ripe for such a move. “The epidemic has more or less subsided, and it’s safe for audiences to go back to theaters,” he said. “That’s why this critical move was taken. It will definitely increase a certain percentage of audiences back to theaters, and it will give audiences a breather.” Use of exhibition revenue.
