Lake Tahoe hosts American Century Championship celebrity golf

The 17th hole at Edgewood during last year's US Century Championship.

Only a handful of celebrities have a real chance of winning, but this year, that number is higher than ever.

When the US Century Championship Celebrity Golf Tournament kicks off Friday at Edgewood Tahoe, it will be the most powerful venue in its 33-year history.

Celebrities in the ACC this week include Justin Timberlake; Stephen, Dyer and Seth Curry; Annika Sorenstam; Patrick Mahomes; Tony Romo; Aaron Rodgers; Charles Barkley; defending champion Vinny Del Negro and Saturday Night Live first-time contestant Colin Jost, WWE superstar The Miz, and singer/songwriter Nick Jonas and Jake Owen.

The venue features 87 entrants from the sports and entertainment worlds for a 54-hole tournament using a modified Stableford scoring system.

One difference from the past two years is that Edgewood will allow a large audience to enter. Capacity was capped at 50% last year, and no fans are allowed in 2020 due to pandemic restrictions.

The field represents a total of 17 Hall of Famers, 13 MVP winners, multiple Cy Young and Player of the Year winners, and multiple Grammy and Emmy winners.

There were 12 first-time attendees including Alex Caruso, Dwight Freeney, Robert Griffin III, Nick Jonas, Colin Jost, Jon Lester, Pat McAfee, The Miz, Jake Owen, Jason Scheff, Harrison Smith and Jayson Werth.

There are four women in the field, including World Golf Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam, who is competing in the ACC for the third time (2014, 2021).

“Today” anchor/meteorologist Dylan Dreyer will be joined by golf celebrity Paige Spilanak and NBC Sports reporter Kathryn Tarpon.

favorite to win

John Smoltz competes in the ACC Golf Championship on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

Last year, just days after his father died, Vinny Del Negro won over John Smalls in the playoffs.

Those two, along with three-time champion Mark Mulder, two-time champion Tony Romo and the 2020 winner Maddy Fish, are likely to be among the contenders.

But also look for Annika Sorenstam, who was shortlisted last year, and Stephen Curry is almost always near the top of the charts.
