johar: How can you despise Bollywood when you have loved it for over 100 yrs: Karan Johar on social media hate

Negative jokes are just a mirage, says filmmaker Karan Johar, whose ‘Tell Everyone’ celebrity show ‘Koffee with Karan’ has been ridiculed, slammed on social media and sparked inside and outside the industry a lot of controversy.

Johar is gearing up for the seventh season of his talk show, which brings together all the Indian film luminaries, many of whom have been controversial for their candid comments about colleagues and others.

“There was a lot of social media hatred of Bollywood in general and ‘Koffee with Karan’ was suddenly one of the targets… But, even then I knew it was all virtual, not real. It wasn’t the real truth because Disney + Why is Hotstar in the show? Why are the actors in the show?

“Why am I still interested in doing this? I think we’re all on the same page. That’s why we realize that all the negative jokes are just — it’s a mirage. It doesn’t really exist. It doesn’t exist at all,” Johar told Reuters
PTI Interview here.

How did you suddenly start hating Bollywood, something you’ve loved for over 100 years? the filmmaker asked.

He said the wave of negativity never worried Johar because he knew it too would pass.

His confidence was restored when audiences flocked back to theaters to watch movies after months of being stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

“And then some of the movies start to do really well. You realize people are watching TV and movies. They come back when they really want to. And when that happens, what’s the hate?” he added.

Faceless and nameless trolls need to realize that the hate they spread on social media “is not a real feeling,” Johar said.

“You can only hate if you feel pain yourself or if you’re a hater. You can hate everything from Bollywood to bananas. But at the end of the day, the hate isn’t a real feeling. It’s just from people’s frustrations and anger. I just hope the nameless people, the people who are trolling and spreading negativity, realize it’s all going to come back to them and bite them, not us,” the director added.

“Koffee with Karan” is unique in its ability to give fans a rare and intimate peek at the off-screen dynamics of the film industry, but there are also situations where both guests and hosts spin out of control.

From Kangana Ranaut calling Johar the ‘flag bearer of nepotism’ in the industry, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s digging of Ranbir Kapoor affairs, to cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul getting bogged down for their comments about women, satire and stars on the show Often makes headlines.

Johar, who has hosted the show since its first season in 2004, admits that celebrities routinely censor themselves while sitting on the couch.

However, the filmmaker said that “Koffee With Karan” runs on the “ambience” of the star, not the controversy.

“They do censor themselves, but the idea is to try to create joy out of it. It’s not about answers, sensationalism, or controversy. It’s about atmosphere. That’s what the show is going to capitalize on,” he added.

Reports suggest that the director plans to bring the Khan family — Shahrukh, Salman and Amir — together as special guests until the end of the season, which will be the first time the trio will appear together on the chat show.

But even for someone like Johar, it’s a tall order.

“It’s impossible to get three Khans. I can’t do it, I don’t admit I can. I can’t do two of them at the same time and forget three,” he added.

Season seven of “Koffee With Karan” premieres Thursday on Disney+ Hotstar.
