April, the Swiss Confederation President (de facto head of state) Ignazio Cassis visits Japan for talks with the country’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. As is customary, gifts are exchanged, and Cassis’s office asked for an example of what just became the hottest Swiss watch in years and decades: MoonSwatch, a $260 Swatch-produced version of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, A chronograph famous for being worn by NASA astronauts on the moon.

However, the Swiss president was out of luck. “We were happy, but we told them the only way he could get the watch was to line up people in his office, hoping they would find it at the Swatch store in Bern,” said chief Nick Hayek Jr. of the Swatch Group, the world’s largest The largest watch manufacturer in the world, owns two brands, Swatch and Omega.

Hayek, a 67-year-old billionaire who drives himself to work in a Mini with a pirate flag flying outside his office, prides himself on the fact that despite the high demand. “It doesn’t help if you have deep pockets. Patek Philippe and Rolex clients, Breguet clients, Richard Mille clients, they all ring. They all want one. But even if you give us $10,000, there is no What a difference. You have to wait, you have to buy in the store. That’s a game changer.”

But finding the MoonSwatch in any Swatch store, anywhere, has been a matter of luck, time and sheer stamina since its launch on March 26, with global chaos.

In the previous week, the news has gradually flowed out. On March 17, some cryptic ads appeared in select newspapers with blank pages that read: “It’s time to replace your Omega…Swatch” and “It’s time to replace your Swatch…Omega”. Ahead of the timepiece’s March 24 release, social media feedback hinted at something with a planetary theme: 11 Swatch watches that faithfully resemble the iconic Speedmaster Moonwatch, but are battery-powered, brightly colored, and made from Swatch’s eco-plastic alternative Made of bioceramics.

The color palette is inspired by the planets in the solar system: there are missions to the sun in bright yellow, missions to Neptune in dark blue, missions to Jupiter in beige and orange, and of course, missions to the moon in black, closely related to the Omega original.
