Hollywood publicist calls stars like Doja Cat ‘dumb’ for DM flirtations

Doja Cat should be clearer.

‘Stranger Things’ actor Noah Schnapp appeared embarrassed after revealing to the world that she privately messaged him on Instagram asking if his co-star Joseph Quinn had a girlfriend — and 17-year-old Can Schnapp make Quinn “hmm” (hit me).

Doja Cat, 26, then freaked out, calling the teenager “incredibly socially aware and punchy” on Instagram Live.

But a Hollywood publicist said the musician screwed up the line she was on.

“Why would she DM a teen and want him to keep it a secret? They live on social media and never keep a secret,” the publicist said. “I think it’s stupid. You should always be mindful of your celebrity status and not put your reputation at risk. Doja Cat would be smarter to contact her PR and ask for an introduction. Best with someone whose work is a secret deal.”

Today, however, more and more celebrities are skipping this tried-and-true behavior and taking matters into their own hands. They also left online evidence of their sexual desires – and took a hit for it.

Even chart-topping music stars who seem like they should have no trouble attracting women in the real world are starting to use social media to connect. Such was the case with Lil Wayne, who blatantly proposed to pop singer/influencer Siew Pui Yi on Instagram and posted a message on Instagram that was less subtly than his famous verse. It just shows a black heart and four pop-up eyeball emojis. She replied, all smiles and red hearts on her face. Then the heavily tattooed rapper cuts to the chase: “I want you.”

The exchange ends here. But for Yi, who plays Ms. Puiyi, receiving flirtatious DMs is the norm.

“People have been DMing her, trying to hook her up. There’s even an NFL Super Bowl champion,” her rep told The Washington Post, referring to former Eagles linebacker Mychal Kendricks. He reached out in 2021 — the same year he was jailed for a day after pleading guilty to insider trading — and asked: “Can we know each other? [sic]. ”

A spokesman for Lil Wayne did not respond to a request for comment. Kendricks and his attorney did not respond to requests for comment.

“I was taken aback when she retweeted Lil Wayne’s DM,” said Pui Yi’s rep. But I think social media is just a direct way to do that. “

This is a far cry from the era of simulcasts arranged by the industry.

“In the past, actors used to ask their agents to arrange swimsuit models, new actors, etc. for them,” said one model, who received more than her share of unsolicited DMs. “Now they can do it themselves. I don’t think they even ask their manager for an introduction. They just swipe into DMs on Instagram.”

Oddly enough, Schnapp himself is no stranger to sneaky Insta hookups. Last year, he was exposed online for giving unsuccessful advice to “Love Island” contestant Lucinda Strafford, who is four years his senior. “I think he was like 16 and he was like, ‘I love you…'” she revealed on the radio show.

But there are many times when this online do-it-yourself approach actually works. Last year, before Bob Saget’s death, his wife Kelly Rizzo posted a TikTok video explaining that they fell in love after he sneaked into her DM, writing that he was “looking for a good Midwestern girl.”

Other success stories include Nick Jonas, who reached out to his now-wife Priyanka Chopra privately via Twitter. They texted for six months before meeting in person at Vanity Fair’s 2017 Oscars party. When Mandy Moore posted about her love for the Dawes band on Instagram, she was taken aback. Lead singer Taylor Goldsmith saw it, slipped into her private messages, and the couple later married.

Former “Bachelorette” contestant Wells Adams tweeted about “Modern Family” actress Sarah Hyland: “Next time I’m in LA, I’ll take you out for drinks and tacos.” She was hooked, and they Soon to be married.

Liza Anderson, owner of Anderson Group Public Relations, thinks it’s actually better to cut out the middleman. In the past, “there was a back-and-forth phone call between the agent, the publicist and the manager; it was a long chain of communication that took a long time,” she recalled to The Washington Post. “DMing is very effective. It’s quick and easy, and it works.”
