Hollywood Legend Tallulah Bankhead’s New York Country Estate

daily list

Place: Pound Ridge, New York

price: $7.5 million

Windows was once the upstate New York country estate of Hollywood legend Tallulah Bankhead, where she let down her hair and undressed as she entertained guests at her wild all-night party.

“The long driveway with the sign ‘Please honk’ is still there,” said listing agent Jaclene Ginnel, president of Ginnel Real Estate. “She wants enough time to give her guests a special greeting.”

Bankhead, who starred in Broadway’s “Little Fox” (1939) and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Lifeboat” (1944), lived in a whitewashed brick colony in the 1930s, raising various Exotic pets, including a lion cub named after Winston Churchill and a champagne-sipping parrot.

She’s known for her amorous exploits – she’s been quoted as saying “I’m as pure as slush driven away” and claims she’s had thousands of extramarital affairs with members of both sexes – like her 300 roles in the film , stage, television and radio.

In her 1952 autobiography, Bankhead referred to Windows as “my haven and retreat, my castle and my cloister,” and she named it that way because there was so much of it.

Bankhead, who smokes 150 cigarettes a day, suffers from emphysema. She died in 1968 at the age of 66. Decades ago, she sold the windows and moved into an apartment in New York City.

The estate has not been listed for nearly three years.

“The residence is high up in the centre of the property,” Ms Kinnell said. “It’s bucolic and private, and while it’s been updated, it’s almost in pristine condition.”

The pool house has a great room with a kitchenette, a bathroom and a dressing room.
