The outrage over the Will Smith-Chris Rock slap at the 2022 Oscars never fully subsided. But why won’t Chris host the Oscars in 2023? Learn more.
Let’s start with a throwback: while hosting the 94th Academy Awards and presenting the best documentary feature trophy, comedian Chris Rock made a funny joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Everyone else laughed heartily, but for some reason Will Smith couldn’t, so he marched to the stage and suddenly smacked him. Everyone was affected by the dispute, including The Academy, Jada Smith, the audience, the event management, producers, camera crew, online users, news outlets, and everyone else you can think of.
Will Smith later apologized to Chris Rock and the Academy on his Twitter and Instagram. Smith, however, had to deal with harsh repercussions for his crimes, which included being barred from the Oscars. However, it appears Chris did not forget his widespread humiliation even after the public apologies.
Well, considering that the comedian apparently declined to host the 2023 Oscars, we can only conclude that the incident is still fresh in his mind (despite the fact that it happened in March). Yes, you heard correctly.
Chris claimed (at a recent comedy performance in Phoenix) that The Academy approached him and extended an offer for him to host the Oscars in 2023. He declined them though.
He continued by saying that the 2022 Oscars were like a crime scene, alluding to the 1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial. He continued, “It’s almost like inviting the (late) Nicole Brown Simpson to go to the same restaurant where her mother had left her glasses the night she died,” while talking about hosting the event.
Chris added that Smith is bigger than him and that his slap actually hurt. And it goes without saying that the state of Nevada will not want to approve a fight between him and Smith. He went on to say that he rejected down the magnificent opportunity to participate in a Super Bowl ad in order to deflect attention from the Oscar snafu.
After the whole slap scandal, Chris seems to be too scarred to start showing up on any well-known public occasions. Who, then, could blame him? He performs his routine stand-up set, but it will take him some more time to recover from that catastrophic incident.
