At the height of public outrage at J.K. Rowling, actor Daniel Radcliffe, who would never have obtained an acting career were it not for the inspiration of Rowling’s writing, published a letter defending her view of transgender people and in an interview just following the recent criticism leveled at her by American actress Shirley MacLaine, he explains the reason for doing so.

radcliffe says that he felt strongly that he needed to speak out because, particularly since finishing ‘Potter,’ he has met so many queer and trans kids and young people who have identified with Potter in that way. then I heard them say, ‘I want you to know that not everyone in the franchise feels that way.’ And that was really important to me.” “Seeing them hurt on that day, I wanted them to know that it was not the whole franchise.

Radcliffe posted his letter on The Trevor Project’s website. The nonprofit is a group focused on suicide prevention efforts in the LGBTQ community.

it was really important to me because I’ve been involved with the Trevor Project for over a decade, and I wouldn’t have been able to look myself in the mirror otherwise. “But it’s not my place to assume what’s going on in people’s heads.”

Rowling faced backlash in June 2020 after she posted a series of comments in which she claimed that discussing gender identity negates biological sex. “If sex isn’t real, then there is no same-sex attraction,” Rowling wrote. as Rowling continued to assert in the years to follow, “If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women around the world is wiped away. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex eradicates the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives.”

he wrote, “Transgender women are women.” transgender people’s identities and dignity are erased when statements to the contrary are made. It is contrary to every recommendation made by professional health care associations who have a great deal more expertise in this area than Jo or I do.

Radcliffe lamented, To all those who feel their ‘Harry Potter’ experience has been tarnished, diminished, or disrupted by the news reports, I am sorry for the pain these articles have caused. I really hope you do not let this negative criticism diminish the things about the stories that are important to you.

Others who have also appeared in Harry Potter have followed Radcliffe in criticizing Rowling and distancing themselves from the franchise. Most recently, Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the film series, expressed opposition.

“I’m pro-choice, pro-discussion, and pro-human rights everywhere, as well as pro-love. Anything else, I don’t really have much time for,” Felton told The Independent in November. “Similarly, even though Jo is the founder of [these] stories, she was not as integral to the production process as some might believe. I only remember catching a glimpse of her once or twice.”

Radcliffe is presently out there trying to promote his performance in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which debuts Nov. 4 on The Roku Channel.
