“Celebrity Chef Nickey” wows BGC staff, will cook for Gladys Knight


When Gladys Knight comes to town, you better prepare some soul food for her.

Chef Nicky Alexander intends to do just that, after wowing the Boys and Girls Club staff with incredible fare on Monday.

The Boys and Girls Club of Dane County (BGCDC) will host an evening with Gladys Knight at the Overture Center on Saturday, July 16, followed by the annual All White Party with musical guest Dru Hill. Madison365 is proud to be a media partner for this event. Tickets are still available.

Alexander, nicknamed celebrity chef Nicky, was visiting Madison last week, where she once lived and several of her adult children still live in Madison. She brings her grandchildren back from her home in Springfield, Illinois, where she owns and operates Nicky’s Southern-style kitchen.

Here, she received a notice that she had been tagged in a social media post — that the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County is looking for a chef to cater to those who will be entertaining at its main fundraiser this weekend Celebrities including Gladys Knight, Dru Hill, After 7 and more.

In an interview with Madison365, Alexander said she knew she had to work on it. She Googled the address of the BGCDC office and stopped by to speak with COO Laura Ford Harris and schedule a tasting for Monday.

“I said, if you’re tasting based, you probably need to have your pen ready because it’s done after the tasting,” Alexander said.

Gladys and other musicians and other local VIPs will enjoy grilled chicken thighs, vegetables, smoked turkey, homemade macaroni and cheese, candied yams, grilled salmon, fried catfish, BBQ ribs, red bean and creamy rice braised shrimp grits, peach cobbler and ” My infamous cornbread”.

Alexander has built a reputation as a celebrity chef over a long culinary career.

“I think if you count my kids, I’ve been a cook for over 30 years,” she said. “But cooking for others, 20+ years.” Some of those “others” include Viola Davis, Nicole Wallace, rock star Trina, Kevin Campbell, and more.

It’s not just about the red carpet, though—Alexander says she also feeds the homeless in Springfield and elsewhere, and is happy to cook for anyone who loves Southern-inspired fare.

“Anyone who wants to try my delicious food, I can,” she said.
