TV and film actress Mary Tyler Moore passed away Wednesday at the age of 80, and as news of her passing spread, prominent friends, entertainers and media personalities took to social media to express their condolences.

Moore’s extraordinary comedic timing and role as a professional woman on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” has won her legions of fans, and as many contemporary broadcasters shared Wednesday, it’s an inspiration for women in journalism.

Ed Asner, who played Moore’s antagonist on the seminal 1970s sitcom, tweeted:

In the 1960s, Moore played a housewife on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” and she would eventually go on to take on more dramatic roles after her own sitcom. She won a Tony and an Emmy for this role, and was nominated for an Oscar in 1980.

Moore played a vivacious local Minneapolis newsmaker on her eponymous show, a character popular in the city in real life; it erected a statue of Moore’s Mary Richards.

On social media, several prominent figures shared how much Moore meant to them, as well as their grief over her passing.
