If you’ve ever run your fingers through your hair and felt the product build-up at the roots, you probably thought that shampoo was the only way to go. But, according to some hairdressers and stylists, skipping washes entirely can actually be beneficial to your hair – particularly if you have long locks – by not stripping it of its natural oils and nutrients. Here are some tips on how often you should be washing your hair, based on what the professionals said.

Benefits of washing your hair less

PC–SHEfinds
  1. First, it’s possible to use shampoo and conditioner every day without drying your scalp because unlike other hair products, which penetrate deep down into the follicle and dry out your scalp, shampoo is designed to cleanse your hair on the surface.
  2. Second, washing your hair more often can make it brittle and stringy, which affects its elasticity and will lead to breakage after time.
  3. Lastly, some experts think that skipping a day of washing might actually stimulate increased growth by making oils in your sebum go dormant for a while; once you do wash again and rinse them away, new ones are produced!

Do you need to shower everyday?

PC–Hindustan Times

Most of us have been told that it’s necessary to shower every day, or at least every other day, in order to maintain hygiene. But according to New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Neal Schultz, washing your hair everyday isn’t necessary. The idea that we need to wash our hair frequently goes back 100 years when we used lye shampoos, he says. With sulfate-free shampoo and more natural ingredients, a daily wash might be entirely too much for your locks!

An increase in washing frequency may also make hair less healthy over time and scalp conditions more aggravated: According to dermatologist Dr.

What happens when you don’t wash your hair

PC–Stylecraze

When hair is washed, it removes dirt and oil from your scalp that weighs down your natural oils, which causes overproduction of sebum, explains professional hair stylist Gina Scrivanich. Therefore, this can cause a build up. When you don’t wash your hair for some time, your scalp will reach a balance and you’ll find that less sebum is produced because there’s no build up weighing it down. Basically, when you wash less, you’re leaving behind dirt and oil that can dry out or even damage your strands; but if you don’t have a ton of buildup to start with then skipping washes might be okay.

How to make it work with dry shampoo

PC– The List

Knowing how often you should be washing your hair can help make it look healthy, shinny, and beautiful. More importantly, if you over wash or don’t wash your hair enough, it can become dry and brittle! There are a few different schools of thought on this issue of how often people should wash their hair.

Every other day – Hair experts recommend shampooing every other day to limit excess product build up and to let natural oils do their job in between washes. For some people who have greasy roots or are prone to acne breakouts around the hairline, this regimen may not work for them since the oils that may cause these problems will remain in place with only one shampoo per week.

How often should you wash your hair

PC–Times Of India

I interviewed four hairdressers about how often you should wash your hair. Here are their responses:
1) It’s always good to try and find your own routine and stick to it. For instance, if you shampoo every time after exercising, stop doing that as it can remove oils from your scalp and dry out your hair.

2) For most people with straight hair, they will only need to wash twice a week at most – when they wash is up to them.

3) This is such a personal question – everyone is different. I typically suggest people ask themselves what their daily routine looks like before deciding when to wash their hair because it all depends on that!
