Brad Pitt emphasized “self-reflection… taking account of folks I may have hurt and instances I’ve plain gotten wrong” in his artwork.

Brad Pitt made his artistic debut! The presentation of the 58-year-old actor’s creations at Tampere, Finland’s Sara Hildén Art Museum was a welcome surprise. The exhibition in Finland, which now features ceramics and sculptures by Pitt and Nick Cave of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds fame, was originally intended to feature just the creations of British artist Thomas Houseago. Houseago, though, succeeded in getting the museum to exhibit pieces by Nick Cave and Brad Pitt as well.

The Sara Hildén Art Museum released a statement saying, “Cave and Pitt are already well-known in their respective industries of music and film, but this is the first time they have ever displayed their artwork – pieces which were made throughout the course of a continuing interaction with Houseago. Brad and Nick admitted they were both anxious and eager about showing their work in public for the first time when they attended a pre-opening event last week, according to Finnish media, which obtained the information from Associated Press.

Among Pitt’s nine pieces, there is a plaster panel showing a shooting scenario and a house-shaped structure made of clear silicone and shot with bullets. It’s interesting to note that after Brad Pitt’s turbulent (and still continuing!) divorce from Angelina Jolie in 2017, the Oscar winner took up the hobby of creating ceramic art. Pitt revealed that his art was about “self-reflection” in an interview with YLE. The Babylon actor opened up about his previous failed relationships, saying, “It’s about, you know, where have I gotten it wrong in my relationships? Where did I go wrong? Where am I at fault here? It resulted from accepting responsibility for what I would describe as a radical inventory of one’s self, being brutally honest with oneself and… considering the people I may have offended and instances in which I’ve simply been wrong.” Pitt split up from Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie in two highly publicized divorces.

However, Nick Cave created 17 ceramic figures that portray a demon’s life: “Because it was red, I wanted to draw a devil. And I enjoy red glaze’s colour. I ultimately made the decision to create the devil’s own life narrative. It speaks to something about the need for or concept of forgiveness for me personally. For me, it’s a really personal piece of art.

The exhibition began on Sunday, September 18, and it will remain up until January 15, 2023.
