BO: Hollywood's blow to Bollywood

Three Hollywood films made it into the top 10 domestic box office this year, with Benedict Cumberbatch’s “Doctor Strange in the Mad Multiverse” at No. 5 with a core income of Rs 130. Given excluding GST and/or other taxes and levies.

As expected, the list opens with the Hindi version of Prasanth Neel’s ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ (starring Kannada star Yash, which grossed Rs 43.47 crore) and SS Rajamouli with Ram Charan and Jr NTR Collaborative “RRR” tops the list. Earnings were Rs 274.31 crore. The numbers were reported by websites covering the film industry.

Based on data from the authority IMDb.com (including GST and, if applicable, other taxes or levies).

Among the Hindi films, the surprise was Vivek Agnihotri’s “The Kashmir Archives” with Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi (Rs 2.912 crore; Rs 3.372 crore worldwide). It was followed by Aneez Bazmee’s ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ (Rs 2.13 crore; Rs 2.625 crore worldwide) with Kartik Aryan, Tabu and Kiara Advani and Alia Bhatt’s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, which earned Rs 1.291 crore (global, Rs 2.625 crore) Rs 194.9 million), a rare feat for a female-centric social drama. These IMDb.com data are for total collections.

None of the recent Bollywood releases have come close to these numbers. Srijit Mukherji’s Taapsee Pannu-starrer ‘Shabaash Mithu’ has become the third sports drama to fail at the box office after Ranveer Singh’s ’83’ and Shahid Kapur’s ‘Jersey’. This past weekend, the Mithali Raj biopic made just Rs 4 lakh.

Rajkummar Rao-starrer ‘HIT – The First Case’ fared slightly better, raking in Rs 1.35 crore in its opening weekend, which is what KGF: Chapter 2 earned from its first show.

Vidyut Jammwal’s much-hyped ‘Khuda Haafiz: Chapter 2 – Agni Pariksha’ made only Rs 1,091 crore. Moviegoers apparently seem to prefer Marvel-style action movies, as Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: Love and Thunder’s box office gross of Rs 795.5 crore.

In the most recent release, Bollywood’s face protector is “Jugjugg Jeeyo” starring Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani (always great), Anil Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor (Rs 83.17 crore and counting). This is far more than Akshay Kumar’s super-hyped and politically blessed “Samrat Prithviraj” (Rs 68.05 crore), which by the way is another successful Hollywood release “Jurassic World Reign” (Rs 68.56 crore) ) behind.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, Batman (Rs 4,810 crore) and Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick (Rs 3,450 crore) are ahead of Runway 34 starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn (Rs 34, 32.96 crore) and Tiger Shroff’s Heropanti 2 (Rs 24.45 crore).

Now is the time for Bollywood to take a serious introspection and figure out how to cut losses and survive in a post-pandemic entertainment environment.
