BRATTLEBORO — The Stone Church, in collaboration with Vidhi’s Bollywood Jukebox, will be showing Bollywood mega-hit “PK” (2014) on July 23rd at 6pm.

The screening will feature a special presentation by Vidhi Salla, host of the international radio show Vidhi’s Bollywood Jukebox. There will also be Indian snacks and Indian handicrafts for sale, such as shawls, leather bags and silver jewellery curated by Vidhi.

To welcome our new neighbors, Robin Johnson and Vidhi Salla of The Stone Church have decided to let viewers from Afghanistan enter the screening for free.

Vidi wrote: “I know Afghans love Bollywood movies. I recently learned from an interaction with a volunteer at the Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC) in Brattleboro that it was them learning Indy Main source of slang, some may not speak this language but can hum a few Bollywood songs. Hindi may not be their native language, but I hope our Afghan neighbors feel welcome in the best possible way .”

“PK” is a Hindi comedy about an alien who accidentally landed in India and is confused by the unwritten social structure of the place and humanity as a whole. PK or peekay is Hindi slang for drunk. The alien automatically took the nickname after multiple people asked him if he was drunk after hearing his hilarious questions about human society. PK is a satire of organized religion and an outsider’s lens to reveal human prejudice, dogma, and superstition.

The film is suitable for all ages and will have English subtitles. Regarding her choice of film, Vidhi shared, “PK is one of those rare satires that has mass appeal. There are many hilarious examples in the film, such as aliens trying to understand how human religion is determined, or providing The gods of the online blessing service for audiences from different cultures to enjoy. I’m excited to be working with The Stone Church again, especially since many people are asking me about the timing of my next Bollywood movie night. “

Vidhi’s Bollywood Jukebox is broadcast live on Brattleboro’s community radio station WVEW-LP every Thursday from 3-5pm on 107.7fm and worldwide on wvew.org.

Doors open at 5 p.m., show starts at 6 p.m.; admission is $10, free for Afghans. Video playback time: 2h 33m. Book your tickets on StoneChurchVT.com or pick up your tickets at the door on the day of the show.
