As a finishing touch to eye-opening eyeliner and/or shaded eyeshadow, a coat of mascara is frequently applied. While the lifting and volumizing tool can certainly assist you in achieving a more youthful makeup look, there are four mistakes you may be making that may have the opposite effect. With that in mind, we spoke with professional makeup artists Mary Winkenwerder and Alyssia Chang, founder of Prevail Beauty, to learn more about the mascara mistakes you should avoid if you want to look younger!

Mistake #1: Using expired or old mascara

Chang claims that the simplest way to achieve an undesirable clumpy look is to use an older or expired product. “Mascara formulas are constantly updated and improved,” Chang explains, “so if you’ve been using the same mascara for years, it’s time to switch things up.” “Newer mascaras frequently have better staying power and can make your lashes appear fuller, more voluminous,” she says.

Many makeup artists recommend reapplying your eye makeup every 3-6 months and replacing it if it begins to clump or gives a flatter or less voluminous effect.

2—Failure to Curl Your Lashes First

According to Chang, eyelash curlers are mascara’s best friend when it comes to sky-high lashes. Failure to use this tool prior to applying mascara may result in the droopy look you desire. “Many women make the mistake of not curling their lashes before applying mascara,” says Chang.

This can “give your lashes a droopy, downward-facing appearance, making you look tired and aged,” she says. “Before applying mascara, curl your lashes with an eyelash curler to give them a more lifted look,” she suggests.

3— Applying Mascara Inequitably (or Too Much!)

The best anti-aging mascara looks, according to Winkenwerder, are evenly distributed, non-clumpy, and subtle. “Rich mascara statements are stunning,” she says, “and they require a patient hand to create.” “When applying mascara, take your time so that only a small amount is applied to the appropriate areas,” she adds. For this, Winkenwerder suggests lightly coating the lashes. “Build mascara volume slowly with a clean wand and set it for about 5 to 10 minutes before starting your day,” she recommends.

She emphasises that too much mascara applied at once causes lashes to “look uneven,” even if they are “naturally full” and healthy. Winkenwerder recommends “ensuring the lashes are evenly coated with mascara, one coat at a time” with a clean wand. Evenly applied mascara appears “healthy,” and “build volume with mascara one step at a time for dynamic lash statements” will improve the appearance of your lashes significantly.

4— Sleeping In Your Mascara

When it comes to eye makeup, the most important thing to avoid is sleeping in it or not completely removing it before hitting the sheets. According to Chang, this can lead to increased wrinkling, dark under-eye circles, and clogged pores, among other issues. “Mascara can easily clump and flake off during the night, leaving you with raccoon eyes and bacteria on your skin,” she says.

“This can age your skin and make you look much older than you are,” she warns. Chang concludes, “it is always important to use a good makeup remover and take the time to gently remove all traces of mascara before going to bed.”
